Afro-Cuban Drumming

We had a wonderful band from Sacred Heart come and play for us.
There were saxophones, trombones, drums, jimbos, congos, clarinets,
keyboard and electric guitars.

The band played songs in Spanish.
We clapped along to the beat and played some instruments.

Fun with Maths

We made a pictograph of all the things we did in the holidays.
We drew a picture of ourselves then glued our drawing onto the graph.
We can count how many children went swimming - there were 7.
3 children went to Auckland in the holidays.
Another 3 road motorbikes during the 2 week school holiday.

Sunhats

We have been back at school for one week now.
We all enjoyed our holidays and had fun going to the movies to see Turbo or The Smurfs. Some of us went to Auckland and others stayed at their Nana's/Aunties house.

It is very warm and sunny this term and we are learning to be Sun Smart!
We all have our own hats with our name on it.

We drew our hats and labelled them using Kidpix.
It was hard work finding all the letters on the keyboard to type our words.

Mystery Creek Trip

We had a fantastic trip to Mystery Creek.
We learnt about what life was like in the olden days.
When we got back to school we drew pictures
about what we saw during the trip.

We learnt about what children used to wear when
they went to school. Boys wore shirts and hats and
girls wore pinafores and bonnets.

They used to wear hats to keep the cooties from
jumping between childrens heads!

We found out how people used to wash their clothes by hand.  We washed material against a scrubbing board and then squeezed the clothes through a mangler to dry the clothes (we had to watch out and make sure we didn't squeeze our fingers!).

There were no washing machines or dryers because
they had not been invented yet and there was no
electricity to do the job for us.

We really liked the big paper mache cow.
We learnt that you can make butter and cheese
and cream from the milk.

Earl showed us old photos and the old machines people used to use on the farm before motorbikes and tractors.

Earl also found a frog for us to have a look at.
He was hiding under the metal step.

Thank you to all the wonderful parent helpers
who came along on the day.
You are all superstar parents and we couldn't have done it without you!

Hopscotch

We have been learning about games our grandparents used to play.  They didn't have ipads or television to watch so they had to play games like hopscotch.

Hopscotch is a great game you can play and all you need is a piece of chalk and lots of energy to hop and jump!!

We drew squares to hop and jump in. We practiced writing our numbers in the boxes.

Cross Country Day

On Friday we had our cross country race at school.

We ran at 11.10am and some parents came
to watch and cheer for us.

Thank you for your support!

Here is a video of the start of a race...

"I was tired and running around the grass on Putikitiki."

"I feel fast and I like cross country."

"I am running around Putikitiki and I was tired."

"I felt like I was going to fall over but I didn't."

"The winner was the fastest boy I've ever seen!"

"I like cross country it made me very tired."

What was school like for our grandparents?

We are learning to use puppet pals on our ipad.
We love using the ipad!
